What You’ll Need:
- Cardstock (or any thick paper)
- Elmer’s Glue
- Table Salt
- Watercolor Paints
- Paintbrush
- A small cup of water
Instructions
1. Draw on an image with glue
Start by laying your piece of cardstock on a flat surface. Using Elmer’s Glue, let your little artist squeeze the glue on the cardstock in anyway they like. They can make simple shapes like hearts, stars, or their name in cursive. Abstract squiggles, zigzags, or spirals are also great options.
2. Sprinkle with Salt
While the glue is still wet, generously sprinkle salt all over the glue lines. You want to completely cover the glue so the salt sticks to every part of the design. Once covered, gently tilt the paper over a tray or sink to let the excess salt fall off. The salt should only stick where the glue was applied.
- Tip: Use a spoon or your fingers to have more control of the salt.
3. Let it Dry
Now let the artwork dry completely. This step is important because wet glue and salt can smudge or run if painted too soon. Drying time may take between 1 to 3 hours depending on how much glue is used.
4. Paint the Design
Once the glue and salt are dry, it’s time to paint. Wet your paintbrush, dip it into watercolor paint, and gently touch the salted glue lines. You do not need to brush back and forth. Just tap the paint onto the salt and watch as it spreads along the lines.
- Tip: Rinse your brush between colors to keep the paint clean and vibrant. Use bright shades for the best visual effect.
Dry and Display
After painting, allow the artwork to sit flat until it is fully dry. Once dry, the final piece will be raised, colorful, and ready to be displayed proudly.
Here are some fun ways to display your child’s art:
- Frame it and hang it in their bedroom or playroom
- Tape it on the fridge using painter’s tape
- Create a rotating art wall with clips or a string and clothespins
